B.V.K. Vijaya Kumar

Also known as Vijayakumar Bhagavatula, B G Prasanna Kumar, B Kumar, B NARESH KUMAR, B Vijayakumar

B.V.K. Vijaya Kumar is an electrical engineer whose research applies pattern recognition and computer vision to biometrics; he earned electrical engineering degrees at IIT Kanpur and Carnegie Mellon and joined CMU's ECE faculty in 1982. He coauthored the 2005 book Correlation Pattern Recognition and worked on connected autonomy and multi-agent perception in 2025–2026. IAPR made him a Fellow in 2006 and IEEE elevated him to Fellow in 2010; his CMU service included directing CMU-Africa and serving as interim dean of engineering in 2025. As of October 2026, he is a CMU professor teaching Signals and Systems.

Timeline

  1. 1975–1982

    Education and the CMU faculty

At IIT Kanpur, he earns B.Tech. and M.Tech. degrees in electrical engineering in 1975 and 1977, then a CMU Ph.D. in 1980. He joins CMU's ECE faculty in 1982.

  2. 2005

    Correlation Pattern Recognition

In 2005, he coauthors Correlation Pattern Recognition with Abhijit Mahalanobis and Richard D. Juday. The book develops correlation methods for target and biometric recognition; his CMU research also covers computer vision and pattern recognition.

  3. 2006

    An IAPR fellowship

IAPR elects him a Fellow in 2006 for contributions to frequency domain pattern recognition methods.

  4. 2010

    An IEEE fellowship

IEEE elevates him to Fellow as of January 1, 2010.

  5. 2010–2021

    Associate dean and director

He serves as associate dean for graduate and faculty affairs from 2010 to 2017, interim vice provost for research in 2017, and director of CMU-Africa from 2018 to 2021.

  6. June 2025

    Interim dean at CMU

CMU appoints him interim dean of the College of Engineering in June 2025; he assumes the role on June 6, 2025.

  7. 2025–2026

    ViCARUS and multi-agent perception

From July 2025 to June 2026, he serves as principal investigator of CMU's ViCARUS project on connected autonomy and vulnerable-road-user safety. In 2026, he coauthors an ICASSP paper on communication-efficient multi-agent perception.

  8. As of October 2026

    Teaching at Carnegie Mellon

As of October 2026, he is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at CMU and teaches Signals and Systems through December 2026.
