Baba C. Vemuri

Also known as Baba C Vemuri, B C Vemuri, B Vemuri, B. C. Vemuri, B. Vemuri, B.C. Vemuri

As of October 2026, Baba Vemuri is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida whose work connects geometry, computer vision, and medical imaging. He earned a bachelor's degree in electronics and communication engineering at NIT Trichy in 1979 and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin in 1987, then helped introduce geometric active contours for computer vision. He became an IEEE Fellow in 2001 and an ACM Fellow in 2009, and chaired the program of ICCV 2007. In 2014, he coauthored iPGA for movement-disorder classification and received the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award in 2017. His 2025 work applies Stein shrinkage to batch normalization under adversarial attacks.

Timeline

  1. 1979–1987

Engineering degrees in India and Texas

He earns a BE in electronics and communication engineering from NIT Trichy in 1979, then completes a PhD in electrical and computer engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 1987.

  2. 1990s

    Geometric active contours

With Ravi Malladi and James Sethian, he introduces geometric active contours in a level-set framework for computer vision, with papers in 1993, 1994, and 1995.

  3. 2001

    An IEEE fellowship

He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2001.

  4. 2007

    Chairing ICCV's program

He chairs the program of the 11th IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision in 2007.

  5. 2009

    An ACM fellowship

He becomes an ACM Fellow in 2009.

  6. 2014–2017

    Geodesic methods in image analysis

In 2014, he and Hesamoddin Salehian and David Vaillancourt publish iPGA, an incremental principal geodesic analysis method for movement-disorder classification. In 2017, he receives the IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award for his contributions to computer vision and medical image analysis.

  7. 2025

    Stein shrinkage for batch normalization

With Sofia Ivolgina and P. Thomas Fletcher, he proves in 2025 that Stein shrinkage improves batch-normalization estimates under sub-Gaussian adversarial attacks and evaluates image-classification, segmentation, and neuroimaging models.

  8. As of October 2026

    Distinguished professor at Florida

As of October 2026, he is a Distinguished Professor in the University of Florida's Department of Computer and Information Science and Engineering. He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Information Geometry.
