Ajmal Saeed Mian
Also known as Ajmal Mian
Ajmal Saeed Mian is a computer scientist whose AI research spans 3D computer vision, facial analysis, and machine learning. He completed a PhD with distinction at UWA in 2007 and joined the university in 2008, where his work covered 3D model comparison and facial recognition across expressions. His research includes the Deep Affinity Network for object tracking, LiDAR mapping of Perth, and an ARC project on 3D diffusion models running from 2024 to 2027. He received Western Australia's Early Career Scientist of the Year award in 2012 and the HBF Mid-Career Scientist of the Year award in 2022; the IAPR elected him a Fellow in 2022, and he served as president of the Australian Pattern Recognition Society from 2022 to 2023. As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Computer Science at UWA.

Timeline
-
2007
A PhD with distinction
He completes a PhD with distinction at UWA in 2007.
-
2008–2009
Developing 3D vision
He joins UWA in 2008 and focuses on computer vision methods for comparing 3D models and identifying salient points on their surfaces. In 2009, his 3D facial analysis distinguishes expression changes from individual differences and recognizes faces across expressions.
-
2012
Western Australia's early career award
He receives the Western Australian Early Career Scientist of the Year award in 2012 for work on 3D face and object recognition.
-
2019
The Deep Affinity Network
In 2019, his team develops the Deep Affinity Network for deep-learning data association in object tracking.
-
2021
Mapping Perth with LiDAR
In 2021, his team uses LiDAR to create high-definition 3D point-cloud maps of Perth's central business district.
-
2022–2023
HBF award and IAPR fellowship
In 2022, he receives the HBF Mid-Career Scientist of the Year award and is elected an IAPR Fellow for contributions to geometric deep learning, 3D shape representation and facial analysis. He serves as president of the Australian Pattern Recognition Society from 2022 to 2023.
-
2024–2027
An ARC project in 3D generation
His ARC Discovery Project runs from April 2024 to May 2027 and develops 3D diffusion models for generating and understanding 3D scenes.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at UWA
As of October 2026, he is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Western Australia.
