Researcher

Alessandro Saffiotti

Alessandro Saffiotti is a computer scientist whose research connects artificial intelligence with autonomous and assistive robots. His work spans fuzzy-logic monitoring for robotic systems, culturally aware care robots, and action-model learning for planning in noisy environments. He led the AI4EU research effort and joined the euRobotics board in 2019. As of October 2026, he is a full professor at Örebro University, heads the AASS Cognitive Robotic Systems Laboratory, and is a visiting academic with the Oxford Robotics Institute.

Timeline

  1. 2007

    Monitoring with fuzzy logic

In 2007, he coauthors “Monitoring the state of a ubiquitous robotic system: a fuzzy logic approach.”

  2. 2017

    Culturally competent assistive robots

In 2017, he coauthors a paper on the CARESSES project, which aims to develop assistive robots that adapt their behavior, speech, and interaction to the cultural identity of the person they assist.

  3. 2018

    Cultural skills for care robots

In 2018, he works with researchers from Europe and Japan on a robot that adapts its movements, speech, gestures, and conversation suggestions to the person it assists.

  4. 2019

    AI4EU and euRobotics

In 2019, he leads the research effort for AI4EU, a European AI-on-demand platform, and serves as its scientific manager. He joins the euRobotics board for a two-year term and seeks to shape research and innovation in European AI and robotics.

  5. 2025

    Learning lifted action models

In 2025, he coauthors “Learning Lifted Action Models for Planning Domain Acquisition in Noisy Environments.”

  6. As of October 2026

    Professor and visiting academic

As of October 2026, he is a full professor of computer science at the University of Örebro and heads the AASS Cognitive Robotic Systems Laboratory. He is also a Visiting Academic with the Oxford Robotics Institute’s GOALS group.
