1978–2007
From Padua to Berkeley
Born in Milan in 1978 and raised in Padua, he earns an electrical engineering Laurea from the University of Padua in 2002. He completes an MS in 2004 and a PhD in 2007 in electrical engineering and computer sciences at UC Berkeley.
-
2007–2013
Postdoc and faculty appointments
Earlier in his career, he works at Stanford and SRI International. From June 2009 to mid-2013, he serves as an assistant professor at TU Delft; in mid-2013, he joins Oxford as a University Lecturer.
-
2012–2017
VeriSiMPL and model checking
In summer 2012, he and D. Adzkiya release VeriSiMPL, software for verification via bisimulations of Max-Plus Linear Models. In 2017, he co-authors a paper on quantitative model checking of controlled discrete-time Markov processes.
-
2023–2024
AAAI award and IEEE Fellowship
In 2023, he and Joar Skalse co-author "Misspecification in Inverse Reinforcement Learning," which wins AAAI's Outstanding Paper Award. In 2024, he becomes an IEEE Fellow for contributions to verification and control of stochastic hybrid systems.
-
2024
AI deployment work at ICML
In 2024, his Oxford Control and Verification group presents "Games for AI-Control: Models of Safety Evaluations of AI Deployment Protocols" at ICML24's TiFA workshop.
-
June 2026
Joining the AI Act panel
In June 2026, the European Commission appoints him to its AI Act Scientific Panel as an independent expert. ELLIS lists him as a Fellow at the University of Oxford.
-
Since August 2026
Lead Scientific Adviser
He becomes Lead Scientific Adviser to the European Commission's AI Office and supports its scientific assessment of general-purpose AI models, innovation, testing, and evaluation. He is Professor of Verification and Control in Oxford's Department of Computer Science.
