Alessio Butti

Alessio Butti is undersecretary of state for technological innovation in Italy's Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and he oversees the committee that is updating the country's national AI strategy. Early on, he held local office in Como, winning a seat on the city council in 1985 and serving as deputy mayor from 1994 to 1996. He entered the Chamber of Deputies in 1992, moved to the Senate in 2006, and joined Brothers of Italy in December 2012. In November 2023 a coordination committee was presented to help draft Italy's national AI strategy, following a decree by Butti, and in 2024 he chaired G7 ministerial meetings on technology and digital in Trento and Como. In September 2025 the Senate gave final approval to Italy's national AI law, and he commented publicly on it.

  1. 1985–1996

    Local politics in Como

    He holds a technical-institute diploma and is a registered journalist (giornalista pubblicista). In 1985 he wins a seat on Como's city council for the Italian Social Movement, and from 1994 to 1996 he serves as deputy mayor.

  2. 1992–2012

    Parliament, then Brothers of Italy

    He is elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1992 and again in 1996, and he enters the Senate in 2006. In December 2012 he leaves the Popolo della Libertà to join the new party Brothers of Italy.

  3. 2022

    Undersecretary for innovation

    In 2022 he is named undersecretary to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for innovation.

  4. November 2023

    A committee for Italy's AI strategy

    In November 2023 a 13-member coordination committee is presented to help draft Italy's national AI strategy, after a decree by Butti.

  5. March 2024

    Chairing the G7 in Trento

    In March 2024 he chairs the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Industry, Technology and Digital in Trento, which adopts a declaration focused on AI in the public sector.

  6. October 2024

    G7 digital ministers in Como

    In October 2024 he chairs the G7 digital and technology ministers in Cernobbio-Como, where they advance commitments on AI in the public sector.

  7. September 2025

    Italy's national AI law

    In September 2025 the Senate gives final approval to the national AI law, and Butti calls it a choice that brings innovation back within the general interest.

  8. As of October 2026

    Updating the AI strategy

    He is undersecretary for technological innovation. A decree he signs sets up a committee that works directly under him until January 2027 to update Italy's AI strategy for 2026–2028.
