Francesca Rossi
Francesca Rossi researches constraint reasoning, preferences and collective decisions. Her shared 2003 paper with Carmel Domshlak, Kristen Brent Venable and Toby Walsh combines constraints and conditional preferences in one framework. She was a professor at Padova before joining IBM for research. AAAI elected her a Fellow in 2012. She held conference leadership roles in 2020 and 2023 and later responsible-AI and governance duties at IBM.

Constraints and preferences
Rossi was a computer-science professor at Padova before joining IBM. Her research covers constraint reasoning, preferences, multi-agent systems and collective decisions.
-
2003
Combining constraints and conditional preferences
Rossi coauthored a 2003 IJCAI paper with Carmel Domshlak, Kristen Brent Venable and Toby Walsh. The paper combines hard constraints, soft constraints and conditional preferences in a common framework.Their paper studies consistency and approximation.

2012
AAAI fellowship
AAAI elected Rossi a Fellow in 2012. This recognition sits within a research career on reasoning, optimization and preferences.

2020–2023
Research-community and governance roles
Rossi chaired the AAAI conference in 2020 and the AI, Ethics, and Society conference in 2023. She also leads responsible-AI and governance work at IBM. These activities connect research-community organization with questions about the development and use of AI systems.
