Virginio Cantoni

Virginio Cantoni is an Italian computer engineer who works on pattern recognition and on parallel architectures for image processing and computer vision. After a 1972 degree in electronic engineering at Pavia and research at the Italian National Research Council from 1975 to 1983, he coordinated a national project from 1984 to 1990 to design and build a pyramidal system for image analysis. He became a Fellow of the IAPR in 1994 and of IEEE in 1997, and from 1997 to 2007 he directed the European School of Advanced Studies in Media Science and Technology that he founded at Pavia. He served as Dean of Engineering at Pavia from 2002 to 2008, coauthored the book 3C Vision in 2011, and joined the Italian Prime Minister's Artificial Intelligence Committee in 2023. Today he is Emeritus Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Pavia.

Timeline

  1. 1972–1983

    Pavia degree and CNR research

He earns the Laurea cum laude in Electronic Engineering from Pavia University in 1972. From 1975 to 1983, he is a researcher at the Italian National Research Council.

  2. 1984–1995

A pyramidal system for image analysis

From 1984 to 1990, he coordinates an Italian national project in which a consortium of seven universities designs and builds a pyramidal system for image analysis. He is President of the Italian Group of the International Association for Pattern Recognition from 1985 to 1990, and Director of Pavia University's Department of Computer and Systems Engineering from 1989 to 1995.

  3. 1994–1997

    Fellow of IAPR and IEEE

In 1994, the IAPR names him a Fellow for contributions in architectures for computer vision and service to the IAPR, and Plenum Press publishes Pyramidal Architectures for Computer Vision, a book he co-authors. In 1997, IEEE makes him a Fellow for contribution and leadership in the development of hierarchical architectures for computer vision systems.

  4. 1997–2008

    Media school and engineering dean

In 1997, he founds the European School of Advanced Studies in Media Science and Technology at Pavia University and directs it until 2007. He is Dean of Pavia's Faculty of Engineering from 2002 to 2008; the President of the Italian Republic confers the title of Commendatore on him in 2006, and he receives an IBM Faculty Award in 2007.

  5. 2008–2011

    Lincei secondment and 3C Vision

From 2008 to 2011, he is seconded to the Centro Linceo 'Beniamino Segre' of the Accademia dei Lincei. In 2011, he coauthors 3C Vision: Cues, Contexts and Channels with Stefano Levialdi and Bertrand Zavidovique, published by Elsevier.

  6. By 2019

    Tactile images and fresco restoration

His Computer Vision and Multimedia Lab builds an educational room for the exhibition 1525-2015. Pavia, the Battle, the Future, with 3D reconstructions, virtual simulations, gaze and gesture interaction, and tactile images of paintings. In 2019, the group proposes the Digital Anastylosis of Frescoes challeNgE (DAFNE), which offers virtual solutions to fresco restorers.

  7. 2021–2026

    Italy's AI strategy committee

He becomes a Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association in 2021. In 2023, he joins the Artificial Intelligence Committee serving the Italian Prime Minister, whose experts draft the Italian Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2024-2026, published in July 2024. He is a Fellow of AIIA from 2024, and in 2026 he is elected a Fellow of the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Pavia

He is Emeritus Professor of Computer Engineering at the University of Pavia, where he works in the Computer Vision and Multimedia Lab on pattern recognition, computer vision and multimedia.
