Cristiano Castelfranchi
AI researcher Cristiano Castelfranchi connects cognitive science with multi-agent AI through models of social action and trust. He was born in Rome in 1944 and joined Italy's National Research Council in 1971, with work spanning multi-agent systems, cognitive modeling, and social psychology. At Siena and ISTC, he taught cognitive science and AI, led a research institute, became an ECCAI Fellow in 2003, and shared the 2007 Mind & Brain Prize with Michael Tomasello. His 1998 article on social action for AI agents received the IFAAMAS Influential Paper Award in 2013; in 2020, he co-authored a chapter with Rino Falcone on socio-cognitive trust. As of October 2026, he is an associate researcher at ISTC and a member of its Goal-Oriented Agents Lab.
