Timo Honkela

Also known as Timo Untamo Honkela

Timo Honkela was a Finnish computer scientist who applied Self-Organizing Maps to natural language and, late in life, wrote about AI for peace. At Helsinki University of Technology's Neural Networks Research Centre, he initiated and joined the WEBSOM team, whose method organizes document collections on a map display, and he received a doctorate in 1998 for a thesis on Self-Organizing Maps in natural language processing. From 1998 he was a professor at the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, later served as chief research scientist at Helsinki University of Technology and Aalto University, and held a professorship at the University of Helsinki from 2014 until 2018. In 2017 he published Rauhankone, titled The Peace Machine in English, which proposes using AI, machine learning and language technology to promote peace. He died in 2020.

Timeline

  1. 1984–1989

    A Finnish database interface

From 1984, he works on the Kielikone project, developing a natural language database interface for Finnish, and lectures at the University of Oulu on Lisp, logic programming and artificial intelligence. He earns a Master of Science at Oulu in 1989.

  2. 1990–1995

    Research scientist at VTT

From 1990 to 1995, he is a research scientist at VTT Information Technology, working on intelligent user interfaces, intelligent agents, morphological tools in information retrieval and applications of self-organizing maps. He is project manager of the Glossasoft project from 1993 to 1995.

  3. 1995–1998

    WEBSOM and a doctorate

From 1995, he is a researcher at the Neural Networks Research Centre of Helsinki University of Technology, where he initiates and joins the WEBSOM team, whose method organizes a document collection on a map display using Kohonen's Self-Organizing Maps. From 1996 to 1998, he chairs the Finnish Artificial Intelligence Society. He presents his thesis Self-Organizing Maps in Natural Language Processing in December 1997 and receives his doctorate in 1998.

  4. 1998–2001

    Professor at the Media Lab

From 1998 to 2000, he is Professor of Applied Cognitive and Information Processing Science at the Media Lab of the University of Art and Design Helsinki, where he brings his expertise in Kohonen's Self-Organizing Maps to work with artists and designers. In 2001, he collaborates with George Legrady on Pockets Full of Memories, an interactive installation at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris where visitors scan their own objects into a database organized by a Self-Organizing Map algorithm.

  5. 2003–2013

    Chief research scientist at Aalto

He is acting professor at Helsinki University of Technology from 2003 to 2005, and chief research scientist at Helsinki University of Technology and Aalto University from 2006 to 2013. From 2004, he chairs the IFIP working group WG12.1 on Knowledge Representation and Reasoning.

  6. 2014–2018

    Professor of digital materials

He becomes Professor of Research into Digital Materials at the University of Helsinki and the National Library of Finland in 2014, on a fixed-term professorship that lasts until 2018. In 2014, he is also appointed to the University's VISIO400 team, which charts the University's prospects over the next 25 years, and joins the University Collegiate. He belongs to the Centre for Digital Humanities HELDIG.

  7. 2017

    Writing The Peace Machine

In 2017, Gaudeamus publishes his book Rauhankone (The Peace Machine). The 285-page book proposes applying artificial intelligence, machine learning, language technology and pattern recognition to promoting peace in the world.

  8. May 2020

    Death in May 2020

    He dies in May 2020.
