Erkki Oja
Erkki Oja is a computer scientist whose research spans neural learning, principal component analysis, and pattern recognition. He completed his doctorate in 1977 and held professorships at Kuopio, Lappeenranta, and Helsinki University of Technology. His work includes the 1982 Oja rule and linear-neuron model for principal-component extraction, along with the 2001 book Independent Component Analysis. He led research centers and the Academy of Finland's research council, became an IAPR Fellow in 1994, and received the IEEE Neural Network Pioneer Award in 2006 and the Frank Rosenblatt Award in 2019. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor at Aalto University.
