Matti Pietikäinen
Also known as Matti K. Pietikainen, Matti Kalevi Pietikäinen, Matti Pietikainen
Matti Pietikäinen is a computer-vision researcher whose work includes texture analysis, local binary patterns and facial image analysis. He worked with the Computer Vision Laboratory at the University of Maryland, earned a Doctor of Science in Technology at Oulu in 1982, and established computer-vision research at Oulu. He became an IAPR Fellow in 1994, co-authored a face-recognition paper with Timo Ahonen and Abdenour Hadid in 2004, and received IAPR’s King-Sun Fu Prize in 2018. With Olli Silvén, he published books about artificial intelligence in 2021 and 2023. As of October 2026, he is professor emeritus at the University of Oulu and convened an alumni discussion about AI development in Oulu in 2025.
