Heikki Mannila
Heikki Mannila is a computer scientist at Aalto University who designs algorithms for finding patterns in data, from association rules to episodes in sequences. After a 1985 PhD at the University of Helsinki, he became a professor there in 1989 and coauthored a 1994 paper that identified the monotonicity property for pruning candidate itemsets used by most association rule mining algorithms. Stints at Microsoft Research and Nokia Research followed, along with the 2001 book Principles of Data Mining, the 2003 ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award and the 2009 IEEE ICDM Research Contributions Award. He led the Academy of Finland as president from 2012 to 2022 and returned to Aalto as a professor in March 2022. Since October 2025, he is Aalto's Associate Vice President, AI Strategy and Adoption, and he directs its House of AI research centre.
Timeline
-
1985–1996
Helsinki PhD and professorship
He earns his PhD in computer science at the University of Helsinki in 1985, supervised by Esko Ukkonen, and after a short spell in Tampere becomes a professor at the University of Helsinki in 1989. He is a visiting professor at the Technical University of Vienna in 1993 and a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science in Saarbrücken in 1995–1996.
-
1994
Efficient association rule discovery
In 1994, he coauthors "Efficient Algorithms for Discovering Association Rules" with Hannu Toivonen and A. Inkeri Verkamo. This KDD 94 paper identifies the monotonicity property for pruning candidate itemsets that underlies most association rule mining algorithms.
-
1998–2001
Microsoft Research and Nokia
He moves to Microsoft Research in Redmond in 1998 and returns to Finland in 1999 to join Nokia Research, where he stays until the end of 2001. In 1999, he also becomes a professor of computer science at Helsinki University of Technology, now part of Aalto University.
-
2001
Principles of Data Mining
With David Hand and Padhraic Smyth, he coauthors the book Principles of Data Mining, published by MIT Press in 2001. The book also appears in Chinese and Polish editions.
-
2002–2004
A SIGKDD Innovation Award
From 2002 to 2004, he is research director of the basic research unit of the Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (HIIT). He wins the ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award in 2003; the award committee highlights his concept of inductive databases, which integrate data mining and databases.
-
2004–2009
Academy professor and ICDM award
He is an Academy Professor from 2004 to 2008 and director of HIIT in 2009. He receives the 2009 IEEE ICDM Research Contributions Award for pattern discovery work that includes his team's research on finding episodes in sequences.
-
2009–2022
President of the Academy of Finland
He serves as Aalto University's vice president for research and education from 2009 to 2012. The Finnish government then appoints him president of the Academy of Finland, the national research council, and he holds the post from March 2012 to 2022. In March 2022, he returns to Aalto University as a professor to prepare an initiative on data analysis and artificial intelligence.
-
Since October 2025
AI strategy at Aalto
He directs House of AI, a multidisciplinary research centre that Aalto establishes in 2024. In October 2025, he also becomes Aalto's Associate Vice President, AI Strategy and Adoption, a two-year post, while remaining a professor in the Department of Computer Science.
