Quang-Tuan Luong

Also known as QT Luong, Q.-T. Luong

QT Luong is a photographer who began his career in computer vision research. Born in Paris, he earned a Ph.D. at Université Paris-Sud in 1992 under Olivier Faugeras, with a thesis that introduced the fundamental matrix and camera auto-calibration. After coming to UC Berkeley in 1993 and working as a research scientist at SRI International until 2007, he wrote The Geometry of Multiple Images with Faugeras (MIT Press, 2001) and shared the first Koenderink Prize in 2008 with Faugeras and Steve Maybank. In 2007 he turned to full-time photography; his 2016 book Treasured Lands won twelve awards, and the Sierra Club gave him its Ansel Adams Award for Photography in 2022. He lives and works in San Jose, California, where his project The Trail is headed for solo exhibitions in 2027.

Timeline

  1. 1992

    Doctorate and camera self-calibration

Born in Paris to Vietnamese parents, he graduates from École Polytechnique and earns a Ph.D. in computer science at Université Paris-Sud (Orsay) in 1992 under Olivier Faugeras. His thesis introduces the fundamental matrix and camera auto-calibration. In 1992 he also publishes 'Camera self-calibration: theory and experiments' with Faugeras and Stephen Maybank at the European Conference on Computer Vision.

  2. 1993–2007

    Berkeley, then SRI International

In 1993, he comes to the University of California, Berkeley, for what is planned as a short stay and does research in artificial intelligence and image processing. He works as a research scientist at SRI International until 2007.

  3. 1997

    A journal paper on self-calibration

In 1997, he and Olivier Faugeras publish 'Self Calibration of a moving camera from point correspondences and fundamental matrices' in the International Journal of Computer Vision. The paper shows that point correspondences between three images, with the fundamental matrices computed from them, are enough to recover a camera's calibration.

  4. 2001

    The Geometry of Multiple Images

In 2001, MIT Press publishes The Geometry of Multiple Images, a 644-page book he writes with Olivier Faugeras. The book treats the laws that govern the formation of multiple images of a scene and some of their applications.

  5. 2002–2007

    Leaving research for photography

By 2002, he is the first person to have photographed all of the then-existing US national parks. In 2007, he turns to photography full time, helped by his website, one of the most visited individual photographers' websites.

  6. 2008

    The first Koenderink Prize

In 2008, he shares the first Koenderink Prize, a European Conference on Computer Vision test-of-time award for fundamental contributions in computer vision, with Olivier Faugeras and Steve Maybank. The prize recognizes their paper 'Camera self-calibration: theory and experiments'.

  7. 2016–2022

Treasured Lands and a Sierra Club award

In 2016, he publishes Treasured Lands: A Photographic Odyssey through America's National Parks, which goes on to win twelve awards. In 2022, he receives the Sierra Club's Ansel Adams Award for Photography.

  8. As of October 2026

    Photographer in San Jose

He is a photographer who lives and works in San Jose, California. Solo exhibitions of his project The Trail at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland and Foothill College in Los Altos are scheduled for 2027.
