Zhengyou Zhang

Zhengyou Zhang is a computer-vision researcher whose camera-calibration work was recognized with a 2013 Helmholtz Prize. He defended a PhD under Olivier Faugeras at the University of Paris-Sud in 1990. At Microsoft Research he broadened his work from computer vision to multimedia, and ACM named him a Fellow in 2013 for contributions to computer vision and multimedia. He joined Tencent in 2018, and in 2019 he took the helm at Tencent AI Lab. As of October 2026, he is Tencent's chief scientist and director of its Robotics X Lab and Futian Lab.

    A doctorate under Olivier Faugeras

    He defends a PhD under Olivier Faugeras at the University of Paris-Sud in 1990. He receives a doctor of science degree at the same university in 1994.

    Early Helmholtz Prize honoree

    He is among the first Helmholtz Prize honorees in 2013 for his camera-calibration work.

    Heading Tencent AI Lab

    He takes the helm at Tencent AI Lab in 2019, after directing Tencent's Robotics X division.

    Testing embodied intelligence

    At WAIC 2026, he says that embodied intelligence capabilities must be tested in a continuous loop of perception, physical interaction and action.
