Rachid Deriche

Rachid Deriche is a researcher in computer vision and computational neuroimaging. His 1987 paper used Canny’s criteria to derive a recursively implemented optimal edge detector, and his later work applied AI methods to brain connectomics. He joined Inria in 1985, co-founded Realviz in 1998, and led ATHENA through 2022. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus research director and a member of Inria’s Cronos team at Université Côte d’Azur.

  1. 1979–1985

    Engineering and an Inria post

    He earns an engineering degree from the École nationale supérieure des télécommunications in Paris in 1979 and a mathematics doctorate from Université Paris-IX-Dauphine in 1982. He joins Inria as a research scientist in 1985.

  2. 1987

    Canny’s recursive edge detector

    His 1987 paper uses Canny’s criteria to derive a recursively implemented optimal edge detector.

  3. 1998–2008

    Co-founding Realviz

    He co-founds Realviz in 1998, and Autodesk acquires its assets in 2008. His research includes mathematical image processing, 3D computer vision, and computational neuro-imaging.

  4. 2013

    A French Academy prize

    The French Academy of Sciences awards him the EADS Grand Prize in Computer Science in 2013.

  5. 2014

    An honorary doctorate

    The University of Sherbrooke awards him an honorary doctorate in 2014.

  6. 2016

    An ERC brain-mapping grant

    The European Research Council awards him an Advanced Grant in 2016 for Computational Brain Connectivity Mapping.

  7. 2019–2023

    Leading ATHENA and connectomics

    His 3IA Côte d’Azur chair runs from 2019 to 2023 and focuses on brain connectomics with AI algorithms and machine-learning tools. He leads Inria’s ATHENA project team on computational imaging of the central nervous system through 2022, and EURASIP names him a Fellow in 2019 for computational brain imaging. Academia Europaea elects him in 2023.

  8. Since 2025

    Emeritus director at Inria

    In 2025, he is an Inria emeritus researcher with the Cronos team. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus research director and a member of Cronos at Inria’s Université Côte d’Azur center.
