Researcher

Stephen J. Maybank

Also known as Steve Maybank, Stephen John Maybank

Stephen J. Maybank is a computer vision researcher whose work connects camera calibration with machine learning for vision. He studied mathematics at King's College Cambridge, earned a computer science PhD at Birkbeck, and worked at GEC and Reading before his Birkbeck professorship. His camera self-calibration research earned the 2008 Koenderink Prize, and he became a Fellow of the IEEE in 2011. Recent work covers video object detection, knowledge distillation, and object tracking; as of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor of computer science at Birkbeck.

Timeline

  1. 1976–2003

    Mathematics and research

At King's College Cambridge, he earns a first-class mathematics BA in 1976 and completes Part III of the Mathematical Tripos with distinction in 1977. He completes a computer science PhD at Birkbeck in 1988. GEC employs him as a research scientist from 1980 to 1995, including a secondment to Oxford from 1993 to 1995; Reading appoints him as a lecturer in 1995 and promotes him to reader in 1999.

  2. 1992–1993

    Camera calibration and reconstruction

With Olivier D. Faugeras and Quang-Tuan Luong, he coauthors the 1992 ECCV paper “Camera Self-Calibration: Theory and Experiments.” His 1993 book, “Theory of Reconstruction from Image Motion,” explains how image motion can reveal camera movement and object shape.

  3. 2004–2020

    Professor at Birkbeck

In 2004, he becomes a professor at Birkbeck and holds the post through September 2020. His research includes camera calibration, structure from motion, image processing, optical flow, and computer vision.

  4. 2008

    A Koenderink Prize

At ECCV in 2008, he receives the Koenderink Prize.

  5. 2011

    Fellow of the IEEE

The IEEE names him a Fellow in 2011.

  6. 2017–2026

    Deep learning for vision

With collaborators, he coauthors a 2017 CVPR paper titled “Spatio-temporal self-organizing map deep network for dynamic object detection from videos.” In 2020, he coauthors the arXiv survey “Knowledge Distillation: A Survey,” which describes how a small student model learns from a large teacher model. A 2026 paper lists him among the coauthors of “Ocean: Object-aware Anchor-free Tracking with Matching-relation Learning.”

  7. 2019

    Election to Academia Europaea

Academia Europaea elects him to its Informatics section in 2019.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Birkbeck

As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor of computer science at Birkbeck.
