Pedro Meseguer
Also known as Pedro Meseguer González
Pedro Meseguer is a researcher at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the CSIC whose work covers constraint reasoning, heuristic search and optimisation for multiagent systems. A doctorate at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1992 followed degrees in physics and computer science, with a thesis on validating multi-level rule-based expert systems under Ramon López de Mántaras. Papers on Max-CSP, symmetries and non-binary forward checking appeared in Artificial Intelligence between 1999 and 2002, and in 2005 the journal published an asynchronous backtracking algorithm that Meseguer coauthored with Christian Bessière, Arnold Maestre and Ismel Brito. A 2012 paper with Patricia Gutierrez cut the number of messages exchanged by BnB-ADOPT, an algorithm for distributed constraint optimization, and a 2018 paper with Milind Tambe and others addressed task allocation for teams of UAVs. Meseguer is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence and a scientific researcher at the IIIA.

Timeline
-
1992–1994
PhD and the VALID project
Meseguer, who holds degrees in physics and computer science, completes a doctorate at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in 1992 with the thesis Validation of Multi-Level Rule-Based Expert Systems, supervised by Ramon López de Mántaras. In 1994, the International Journal of Intelligent Systems publishes The VALID project: Goals, Development and Results, written with E. Plaza.
-
1995–2002
Max-CSP and symmetries
In 1995, Meseguer and Larrosa publish Constraint Satisfaction as Global Optimization in the proceedings of IJCAI-95 in Montreal. Artificial Intelligence publishes Maintaining reversible DAC for Max-CSP in 1999, written with Larrosa and Schiex, and Exploiting symmetries within constraint satisfaction search in 2001, written with Torras. In 2002, the journal adds On Forward Checking for Non-binary Constraint Satisfaction, written with Bessiere, Freuder and Larrosa.
-
2001–2004
Constraint programming committees
In 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004, Meseguer is a programme committee member of the International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming, and in 2003 and 2004 of the International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems.
-
2003–2005
Asynchronous backtracking without links
In 2003, Meseguer and Ismel Brito publish Distributed Forward Checking in the proceedings of the CP-03 conference. In 2005, Artificial Intelligence publishes Asynchronous backtracking without adding links: a new member in the ABT family, written with Christian Bessière, Arnold Maestre and Brito, which proposes an asynchronous backtracking algorithm that avoids adding links between initially unconnected agents.
-
2012
Fewer messages in BnB-ADOPT
In 2012, the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research publishes Removing Redundant Messages in N-ary BnB-ADOPT, written with Patricia Gutierrez. The paper modifies BnB-ADOPT, an algorithm for optimally solving distributed constraint optimization problems, to avoid most redundant messages and to handle cost functions of any arity, which makes the number of exchanged messages at least three times fewer in most cases and yields the version BnB-ADOPT+.
-
2018
Task allocation for UAV teams
In 2018, Meseguer coauthors Decentralized dynamic task allocation for UAVs with limited communication range with Marc Pujol-Gonzalez, Jesus Cerquides, Juan A. Rodriguez-Aguilar and Milind Tambe. The paper presents the Limited-range Online Routing Problem for teams of UAVs and two solutions that model allocation as a Markov Random Field and apply the decentralized Max-Sum algorithm.
-
By 2023
A EurAI fellowship
By 2023, Meseguer is a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence, an honour limited to a very small percentage of the membership of EurAI's member societies. The research focuses on constraint reasoning and heuristic search, and six students complete doctorates under Meseguer's supervision.

As of October 2026
Researcher at IIIA-CSIC
In July 2023, Meseguer is a scientific researcher at the CSIC's Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA). In October 2026, the post is listed under Logic and Reasoning, with research areas that include automated auctions, multiagent systems, optimisation and probabilistic graphical models.
