Researcher

Juan Antonio Rodriguez-Aguilar

Also known as Juan A. Rodríguez-Aguilar

Juan Antonio Rodriguez-Aguilar is an AI researcher whose work examines how autonomous learning agents can align with multiple moral values. He earned degrees in computer vision and artificial intelligence at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and became a EurAI Fellow in 2013. He served as principal investigator for AI4EU, coauthored research on ethical multi-agent environments, and co-supervised a doctoral thesis on trustworthy task allocation. In 2024, he was selected for the OECD Expert Group on AI in the Labour Market, and in 2026 he coauthored a method that combines multi-objective reinforcement learning with linear programming; as of October 2026, he is a Research Professor at IIIA-CSIC.

Timeline

  1. 1998–2001

Computer vision and AI at UAB

He earns an MSc in Computer Vision in 1998 and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence in 2001 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

  2. 2013

    A EurAI Fellowship

He becomes a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI) in 2013. He is a current EurAI Fellow in Spain at IIIA-CSIC.

  3. 2019–2021

    Principal investigator of AI4EU

From 2019 to 2021, he serves as principal investigator for AI4EU at IIIA-CSIC. The European Union project aims to build an on-demand platform and an AI ecosystem that connects knowledge, algorithms, tools and resources.

  4. 2023

    Ethical multi-agent environments

In 2023, he coauthors “Multi-objective reinforcement learning for designing ethical multi-agent environments” for Neural Computing and Applications.

  5. December 2023

    Trustworthy task allocation

In December 2023, he co-supervises a doctoral thesis at the Autonomous University of Barcelona titled “Trustworthy Task Allocation for Human Teams.”

  6. 2024–2025

    The OECD AI labour group

In September 2024, he is selected for the OECD Expert Group on AI in the Labour Market. The group studies AI’s impact on the labour market and works through 2025 to identify policy gaps, increase benefits and reduce workplace risks.

  7. February 2026

    Multi-objective learning for value alignment

In February 2026, he coauthors a paper that combines multi-objective reinforcement learning with linear programming to create environments where agents learn to align with several moral values while pursuing an individual objective. An autonomous vehicle example tests safety, achievement and comfort.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research Professor at IIIA-CSIC

He is a Research Professor in IIIA-CSIC’s Multiagent Systems group. His research covers machine learning, ethics and AI, responsible AI and value-aware AI.
