Enric Plaza

Enric Plaza is an AI researcher whose work includes case-based reasoning, machine learning, and leadership in Catalonia’s AI association. He completed a computer science PhD at the Technical University of Catalonia in 1987 and began research at IIIA in 1988. He coauthored a 1994 overview of case-based reasoning and served as ACIA president from 1994 to 1999. His concept-blending paper with Tarek R. Besold won ICCC’s 2015 Best Paper Award; in December 2025, he chaired the computing and artificial intelligence selection board for Spain’s public research professor scale.

  1. 1987–1988

    PhD and research at IIIA

    He completes a computer science PhD at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 1987. His research at CSIC’s Barcelona Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) begins in 1988 and covers knowledge acquisition, case-based reasoning, and machine learning.

  2. 1994

    A case-based reasoning overview

    In 1994, he coauthors an overview of case-based reasoning with Agnar Aamodt. Their paper covers foundational issues, methodological approaches, and systems in the field.

  3. 1994–1999

    President of ACIA

    From March 1994 to October 1999, he serves as president of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (ACIA).

  4. 2015

    ICCC Best Paper Award

    At ICCC 2015, he and Tarek R. Besold win the Best Paper Award for their paper, “Generalize and Blend: Concept Blending Based on Generalization, Analogy, and Amalgams.”

  5. December 2025

    Chairing an AI selection board

    In December 2025, he chairs the selection board for computing and artificial intelligence posts in the Research Professor Scale of Public Research Organizations.
