Carles Sierra
Carles Sierra is an AI researcher whose work connects autonomous agents, electronic markets, negotiation, and human values. He began AI research in 1985, earned a computer science PhD from UPC in 1989, and coauthored a 1998 paper on trading agents in electronic auctions. EurAI elected him a Fellow in 2005; he served IJCAI as Trustee from 2014 to 2019 and Program Chair for IJCAI-17; ACM/SIGAI gave him its 2019 Autonomous Agents Research Award. He served as EurAI President from 2020 to 2024; in 2025, he received the association's Distinguished Service Award and coauthored a paper on value-aligned clinical protocols. As of October 2026, he is Research Professor and Director of IIIA-CSIC and Adjunct Professor at Western Sydney University, with work spanning multi-agent systems, computational negotiation, value-sensitive design, and AI in education.
