N. S. Sridharan
Also known as Natesa Sastri Sridharan, Natesa Sridharan
Sridharan was an AI researcher whose papers ranged from organic chemical synthesis and plan recognition to knowledge representation and real-time AI systems. He earned a PhD at Stony Brook in 1971 under Herbert Gelernter, then published at IJCAI on chemical synthesis in 1973 and on plan recognition in 1977. Three of his doctoral students finished at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1979, 1983 and 1987. He served as an IJCAI Trustee from 1985 to 1989 and as Program Chair of IJCAI-89, and in 1991 he and Susan Epstein published a paper on knowledge representation for mathematical discovery in graph theory.
Timeline
-
1971
PhD at Stony Brook
He earns a PhD at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1971, with a dissertation on applying artificial intelligence to organic chemical synthesis. Herbert Gelernter is his advisor.
-
1973
Chemical synthesis at IJCAI
In 1973, he has two IJCAI papers: “Search Strategies for the Task of Organic Chemical Synthesis” on his own, and “Analysis of Behavior of Chemical Molecules: Rule Formation on Non-Homogeneous Classes of Objects” with Bruce G. Buchanan.
-
1977
Plan recognition at IJCAI
In 1977, he has two papers at IJCAI: “Plan Recognition Using a Hypothesize and Revise Paradigm” with Charles F. Schmidt, and “Representation of Actions That Have Side-Effects” with Frank M. Hawrusik.
-
1979–1987
Rutgers doctoral students
He advises three doctoral students at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, who finish in 1979 (Lawrence Welsch), 1983 (Susan Epstein) and 1987 (Donna Jo Nagel).
-
1985–1987
Essays in AI Magazine
AI Magazine publishes his essay “Evolving Systems of Knowledge” in September 1985, a personal perspective on the symbolic representation and organization of knowledge. In 1987, it runs his report on the 1986 Workshop on Distributed AI, with a history of earlier Distributed AI workshops, highlights of the roundtable discussions and the participants’ research abstracts.
-
1985–1989
IJCAI trustee at FMC
He serves as an IJCAI Trustee from 1985 to 1989, with FMC Corporation’s Central Engineering Laboratories as his affiliation.
-
1989
Program chair of IJCAI-89
In 1989, he is Program Chair of IJCAI-89 and co-authors the IJCAI paper “Real-Time AI Systems: A Definition and an Architecture” with Rajendra T. Dodhiawala, Peter Raulefs and Cynthia Pickering.
-
1991
A graph theory discovery paper
In 1991, he and Susan Epstein publish “Knowledge Representation for Mathematical Discovery: Three Experiments in Graph Theory” in Applied Intelligence, volume 1, issue 1, pages 7–33. It is a key reference for Epstein’s Graph Theorist (GT), an implemented system that did original mathematical research in graph theory.
