Joshua Lederberg
Joshua Lederberg was a geneticist whose work on DENDRAL helped bring artificial intelligence into biomedical research. He shared the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries about bacterial genes, joined Stanford in 1959, and helped develop a system that identified unknown molecules from mass-spectrometry data. At Rockefeller University, he served as president from 1978 to 1990 and received the National Medal of Science in 1989 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. He became professor emeritus in 1990 and died in 2008.

Timeline
-
1946–1958
Bacterial gene exchange
In 1946, he and Edward Tatum demonstrate that bacteria can exchange genetic material. He shares the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries about bacterial genetic recombination.
-
1948
Replica plating at Wisconsin
After earning his Ph.D. at Yale in 1948, he joins the University of Wisconsin and develops bacterial replica plating, which copies colonies onto filters for further study.
-
1959
Stanford genetics and AI
In 1959, he moves to Stanford School of Medicine to chair its genetics department and expands his research into artificial intelligence and exobiology.
-
1961
NASA's Mars missions
In 1961, he takes part in NASA's Mars missions and designs a computer-controlled mass spectrometer to analyze the Martian surface for signs of life.
-
1965
DENDRAL and expert systems
In 1965, he devises DENDRAL with Edward A. Feigenbaum and Carl Djerassi to identify unknown organic molecules from mass-spectrometry data. The program becomes a prototype for expert systems and the first AI application in biomedical research.
-
1978–1990
President at Rockefeller
In 1978, he becomes the fifth president of Rockefeller University and serves until 1990.
-
1989–2006
National medals
He receives the National Medal of Science in 1989 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006.
-
1990–2008
Professor emeritus at Rockefeller
In 1990, he becomes professor emeritus at Rockefeller University. He dies in 2008.
