Saul Amarel
Saul Amarel researched artificial intelligence, including learning systems and computational planning. He also built university and government research programmes. Amarel established Rutgers’ computer-science department in 1969 with colleagues from RCA Labs. At RCA he had founded a computer-theory group that studied control, learning systems and machine learning. He organized the Rutgers Research Resource on Computers in Biomedicine in 1971 and the Laboratory for Computer Science Research in 1977. He directed both through 1984. Amarel directed DARPA’s Information Sciences and Technology Office from 1985 to 1988. He returned to Rutgers in 1988 as its Alan M. Turing professor.
