Maurice Bruynooghe
Maurice Bruynooghe is a logic programming researcher and an emeritus member of KU Leuven's Declarative Languages and Artificial Intelligence (DTAI) group. In 1975, he brought the Fortran code of the Marseille Prolog interpreter home from Imperial College, and he completed a doctorate on logic programming at KU Leuven in 1979. Machine learning research at KU Leuven began in 1986, when Luc De Raedt started a PhD under his direction, and group members went on to build inductive logic programming systems such as Tilde. He edited the Journal of Logic Programming from 1991 to 2000, and the Association for Logic Programming named him one of fifteen Founders of Logic Programming in 1997. His work with Marc Denecker includes papers on the IDP knowledge base system and a paper on logic programs with aggregates that won a 2021 test-of-time award; he is also a EurAI Fellow.
Timeline
-
1975–1979
Prolog and a Leuven PhD
In June 1975, he visits Robert Kowalski at Imperial College and comes home with punched cards holding the Fortran code of the Marseille Prolog interpreter, and from October to December 1975 he visits Alain Colmerauer in Marseille. From 1975 to 1979, he develops a space-saving Prolog interpreter in Pascal that uses structure copying and tail recursion optimization. He earns a PhD on logic programming at KU Leuven's Department of Computer Science in 1979, advised by Yves Didier Willems.
-
1983–2000
Creating the DTAI group
From 1983 to 2000, he holds a permanent research position at the Belgian National Fund for Scientific Research, based in KU Leuven's Department of Computer Science, and he becomes a professor at KU Leuven in 2000. He works on Prolog implementation, intelligent backtracking, abstract interpretation of logic programs, and planning and temporal reasoning. This research leads to the Declarative Languages and Artificial Intelligence (DTAI) group, which he heads.
-
1986–2006
Machine learning at Leuven
Machine learning research at KU Leuven begins in 1986, when Luc De Raedt starts his PhD under his direction; in the 1990s, group members build inductive logic programming systems such as Clint, Claudien, Tilde, Warmr and ICL. He coordinates the ESPRIT project ILP together with De Raedt, and Hendrik Blockeel completes a doctorate under him in 1998. In 2006, with De Raedt's return to Leuven, the group of Blockeel and Bruynooghe merges with the former machine learning lab at the University of Freiburg.
-
1991–2001
Editing logic programming journals
From 1991 to 2000, he is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Logic Programming, published by Elsevier. In 2001, he becomes Editor-in-Chief of its lower-cost alternative, Theory and Practice of Logic Programming, published by Cambridge University Press.
-
1997
A Founder of Logic Programming
In 1997, the Association for Logic Programming names him one of fifteen Founders of Logic Programming, a group that also includes Alain Colmerauer, Robert Kowalski and Jack Minker.
-
2010
A 60th-birthday symposium
In July 2010, KU Leuven's lab for Declarative Languages and Artificial Intelligence holds a symposium to honor him on his 60th birthday, with keynote talks by Robert Kowalski and David S. Warren. A Liber Amicorum is also prepared for him.
-
2014–2016
The IDP knowledge base system
In 2014, he coauthors "Predicate Logic as a Modelling Language: The IDP System" with Broes De Cat, Bart Bogaerts, Gerda Janssens and Marc Denecker; IDP extends classical logic with rule-based definitions under well-founded semantics and works as a knowledge base system. In 2016, he, Denecker and Mirosław Truszczyński describe the logic FO(ID) and its implementation IDP3 in AI Magazine, drawing on its similarities with answer set programming.
-
As of October 2026
Emeritus at KU Leuven
He is an emeritus member of KU Leuven's DTAI group. In 2021, the John Alan Robinson 20-Year Test-of-Time Award goes to "Ultimate Well-Founded and Stable Semantics for Logic Programs with Aggregates", his paper with Marc Denecker and Nikolay Pelov. With a KU Leuven affiliation, he coauthors the 2024 AAAI paper "Using Symmetries to Lift Satisfiability Checking", and he is a EurAI Fellow.
