Maura Grossman
Also known as Maura R. Grossman
Maura Grossman is a lawyer and research professor whose research applies artificial intelligence to legal document review and studies how courts can handle AI-generated evidence. She earned a bachelor's degree at Brown in 1980, a master's degree and a doctorate in psychology at Adelphi's Derner Institute in 1982 and 1984, and a law degree at Georgetown in 1999. With Gordon Cormack, she showed in 2011 that technology-assisted review could outperform manual review, published a glossary in 2013, and made continuous active learning more autonomous in 2015. She applied continuous active learning to COVID-19 evidence searches in 2020, received the Shira Scheindlin Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021, and coauthored The GPTJudge on AI-generated evidence in 2023. In November 2025, she co-directs a CIFAR network on synthetic AI content in courts; as of October 2026, she is a research professor at Waterloo and holds two 2026 honors for legal innovation and AI governance.
