Matthieu Brucher

Also known as mbrucher

Matthieu Brucher is a computer scientist whose early work includes scikit-learn, the Python machine-learning library. He joined the project through his thesis and coauthored its 2011 Journal of Machine Learning Research paper on supervised and unsupervised learning. He wrote books on scientific Python and machine-learning systems, worked at Total as an information systems engineer, and led development of Audio ToolKit, a real-time audio signal processing library. By 2018, he worked in JPMorgan's quantitative research branch on high-performance computing and computational modeling.

Timeline

  1. 2007

    Joining scikit-learn

Scikit-learn begins as David Cournapeau's Google Summer of Code project in 2007, and Brucher starts working on it for his thesis in 2007. A Supélec-trained engineer, he works on image processing at Université Louis Pasteur in Strasbourg and helps develop Python tools known as scikits.

  2. 2008

    Python for scientists

In 2008, Éditions ENI publishes Python: les fondamentaux du langage, la programmation pour les scientifiques, his book on Python programming for scientists.

  3. 2011

    The scikit-learn paper

In 2011, he coauthors “Scikit-learn: Machine Learning in Python” in the Journal of Machine Learning Research with Fabian Pedregosa, Gaël Varoquaux, David Cournapeau and colleagues. The paper describes a Python module for supervised and unsupervised learning, with an aim of bringing machine learning to non-specialists.

  4. August 2014

    ATKLimiter and Audio ToolKit

In August 2014, he releases ATKLimiter, a free limiter plug-in for Windows and Mac, and updates his compressor and expander plug-ins. Audio ToolKit, the DSP library behind them, uses a threaded-pipeline design.

  5. By 2018

    A PhD and music degree

By 2018, he holds a PhD in machine learning and signal processing from the University of Strasbourg, master's degrees in digital electronics and signal processing and in automation from the University of Paris XI and Supélec, and a Master of Music degree from Bath Spa University.

  6. 2018

    Building Machine Learning Systems

Packt publishes the third edition of Building Machine Learning Systems with Python in 2018, coauthored with Luis Pedro Coelho and Willi Richert. It covers recent developments and widely used datasets and libraries, and explores machine and deep learning techniques using scikit-learn and TensorFlow.

  7. By 2018

    Quantitative research at JPMorgan

He works as an information systems engineer at Total, with interests in machine learning, HPC and simulation. By 2018, he works in JPMorgan's quantitative research branch as a computer scientist specializing in high-performance computing and computational modeling. He leads Audio ToolKit development, a library for real-time audio signal processing.
