Fabian Pedregosa
Also known as Fabián Pedregosa, F. Pedregosa
Fabian Pedregosa is a machine-learning researcher whose work spans open-source software, mathematical optimization and AI for formal mathematics. He contributed to SymPy, led scikit-learn's first public release, and completed a 2015 PhD on feature extraction and machine learning for brain imaging. After postdoctoral work in Paris and Berkeley, he joined Google Research in Montreal and shifted from optimization to AI for math by 2022. He contributed to DeepMind's mathematical-reasoning effort for the 2024 IMO, where AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 reached a silver-medal score, and coauthored a 2025 AlphaProof paper. As of October 2026, he is a research scientist at Google, working on math and code on the Gemini Core team.

Timeline
-
2007–2010
Contributing to SymPy
During college at the University of Granada, he contributes to SymPy from 2007 to 2009; in 2010, he receives a Google Summer of Code scholarship to improve its logic module.
-
2010–2012
Building scikit-learn
In 2010, he takes over scikit-learn and makes its first public release in February 2010. He serves as developer, maintainer and release manager until January 2012. His 2011 paper describes it as a Python module for supervised and unsupervised machine learning.
-
2015
A PhD on brain imaging
In February 2015, he completes a PhD at UPMC on feature extraction and supervised learning on fMRI.
-
2015–2018
Postdocs in Paris and Berkeley
After his 2015 PhD, he pursues postdoctoral research in optimization at INRIA Paris and then UC Berkeley. In 2018, he coauthors Frank-Wolfe Splitting via Augmented Lagrangian Method, which develops a method for minimizing a smooth function over convex sets.
-
2018–2022
Google Research in Montreal
After Berkeley, he joins Google Research in Montreal. He works on mathematical optimization until 2022, then turns to AI for math.
-
2022–2025
AI for mathematical reasoning
Since 2022, he works on AI for math and contributes to the informal reasoning systems behind Google DeepMind's 2024 IMO effort. AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solve four of six problems at the 2024 IMO and reach a 28-point score equivalent to a silver medal. In 2025, he coauthors a paper that presents AlphaProof as an agent for formal mathematical proofs using reinforcement learning.

As of October 2026
Gemini Core team
He is a research scientist at Google and works on math, code and related topics on the Gemini Core team.
