Researcher

Luca Longo

Luca Longo is an artificial-intelligence researcher whose work connects explainable AI, computational argumentation, and models of human mental workload. He studied computer science in Italy and Ireland, completed a computer-science PhD at Trinity College Dublin in 2013, and founded an AI and Cognitive Load Lab at TU Dublin. His 2020 review grouped explainable-AI methods into four clusters, and his 2023 manifesto set out 27 open problems; in 2025, he coauthored a paper on rule-based explanations. As of October 2026, he is a Senior Lecturer at University College Cork and serves on the Royal Irish Academy's Engineering and Computer Sciences Committee.

Timeline

  1. 2002–2013

    Degrees at Insubria and Trinity

He studies computer science at the University of Insubria from 2002 to 2005, earning a BSc, and completes an MSc there in 2007. At Trinity College Dublin, he earns a postgraduate diploma in statistics in 2009, an MSc in health informatics in 2012, and a PhD in computer science in 2013.

  2. 2015–2018

Mental workload and an AI lab

In 2015, he publishes “A defeasible reasoning framework for human mental workload representation and assessment.” At TU Dublin, he founds the Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Load Lab, where artificial intelligence and human-computer interaction meet in research on mental workload. He completes a postgraduate diploma in learning and teaching at Dublin Institute of Technology in 2015 and an MSc in applied e-learning there in 2018.

  3. 2016

    A national teaching award

He wins the National Teaching Hero Award in 2016.

  4. 2020

    A systematic review of XAI

With Giulia Vilone, he publishes a systematic review of explainable AI in 2020, grouping methods into four clusters: review articles, theories and notions, methods, and evaluation. TU Dublin recognizes his research with a university award in 2020.

  5. 2021

    Another Teaching Hero Award

He receives Ireland's Teaching Hero Award in 2021 for a second time.

  6. 2023

    An XAI 2.0 manifesto

In 2023, he coauthors “Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) 2.0: A Manifesto of Open Challenges and Interdisciplinary Research Directions,” which presents 27 open problems in nine categories. He receives the AI Person of the Year award in 2023.

  7. 2025

    Computational argumentation for XAI

In 2025, he coauthors an IEEE Access paper with Serena Berretta, Damiano Verda, and Lucas Rizzo. It combines Logic Learning Machine rule extraction with computational argumentation to improve explanations for multi-class classification tasks.

  8. As of October 2026

    Senior Lecturer at UCC

As of October 2026, he is a Senior Lecturer in UCC's School of Computer Science and Information Technology. In August 2026, he joins the Royal Irish Academy's Engineering and Computer Sciences Committee. He is the founder of the World Conference on Explainable Artificial Intelligence.
