Luca Maria Gambardella

Luca Maria Gambardella is an AI researcher whose work spans ant-colony optimization, machine learning and neural-network image analysis. He directed IDSIA from 1995 to 2020, coauthored the 1997 Ant Colony System paper with Marco Dorigo, and helped win the ISBI 2012 neuron-segmentation challenge with deep networks. He holds a degree and PhD in computer science and co-created NeuralRope, a 100-metre interactive installation in Lugano that represents an artificial neural network, in 2019. He co-founded Artificialy in 2020 and became CEO in mid-October 2025 after serving as CTO and Head of Applied AI; he is also a professor at USI and IDSIA and is CEO as of October 2026.

  1. 1995–2020

    Directing IDSIA

    From 1995 to 2020, he directs the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA). His research spans machine learning, simulation, swarm robotics and ant-colony optimization for transport, assignment and scheduling problems.

  2. 1997

    The Ant Colony System

    In 1997, he and Marco Dorigo publish the Ant Colony System paper, a distributed algorithm for the traveling-salesman problem. Its artificial ants cooperate through pheromone signals to find good routes.

  3. 2012

    Deep networks for microscopy

    With Dan Ciresan, Alessandro Giusti and Jürgen Schmidhuber, he coauthors a deep neural network method to segment neuronal structures in electron-microscopy stacks in 2012. The team wins the ISBI 2012 challenge, outperforming all 16 competing methods on each of three metrics.

  4. 2019

    NeuralRope in Lugano

    In 2019, he co-creates “NeuralRope#1. Inside an Artificial Brain,” a 100-metre interactive urban art installation in Lugano’s pedestrian tunnel that represents an artificial neural network.

  5. 2020

    Founding Artificialy

    In 2020, he co-founds Artificialy with Marco Zaffalon in Lugano to develop AI solutions for business and industry.

  6. By 2021

    Computer science degrees

    By 2021, he holds a degree and PhD in computer science and has a strong interest in artificial intelligence.

  7. Since October 2025

    CEO of Artificialy

    From mid-October 2025, he becomes Artificialy’s CEO after serving as CTO and Head of Applied AI. He is also a professor at USI and IDSIA. As of October 2026, he is CEO of the Lugano company, which develops AI solutions for businesses.
