Luca Cardelli

Also known as Luca Andrea Cardelli

Luca Cardelli is a computer scientist known for programming-language design, and he has co-authored papers on robustness guarantees for machine-learning models. Before joining Microsoft Research in Cambridge in 1997, he worked at Bell Labs and at DEC's Systems Research Center in Palo Alto, where he helped design Modula-3. He led the Programming Principles and Tools team at Microsoft Research and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2005. In 2015 he received the ACM SIGPLAN Programming Languages Achievement Award, and in 2019 he co-authored an IJCAI paper on statistical guarantees for Bayesian neural networks. As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor of computer science at Oxford, where he joined the department in 2013 as a Royal Society Research Professor.
