Andreas Holzinger
Andreas Holzinger is a computer scientist whose work centers on human-centered, interactive, and explainable AI. He completed a doctorate in Cognitive Science in 1998 and a habilitation in Computer Science in 2003, became head of the HCI-KDD Research Unit at the Medical University of Graz in 2010, and held visiting professorships at RWTH Aachen and University College London from 2011 to 2012. His 2016 article, “Interactive Machine Learning (iML),” argued that complex data problems can benefit from combining human intelligence and machine learning; he also held a visiting professorship for machine learning in health informatics at the University of Verona in 2017. He was elected an ordinary member of Academia Europaea in 2019, joined ELLIS in 2020, and became an IFIP Fellow in 2021; from July 2019 to February 2022, he served as a visiting professor for explainable AI at the University of Alberta. BOKU appointed him full professor for digital transformation in 2022, and he received the Most Influential Paper Award in 2024 for his human-in-the-loop work; he is a professor at BOKU’s Institute of Forest Engineering and leads the Human-Centered AI Lab.
