Luca Benini
Luca Benini is a computer scientist whose work connects low-power processor design with AI hardware. After earning an honors degree at Bologna and a Stanford PhD, he held research and industry posts before becoming a professor at Bologna and an STMicroelectronics project architect. His 2024 paper on PULP describes heterogeneous AI-acceleration systems-on-chip. PULPino is a low-energy processor designed for battery-powered devices, and ACM and IEEE awards recognize his hardware contributions. As of October 2026, he holds professorships at ETH Zurich and Bologna and publishes on AI model parallelism and thermal anomaly detection.

Timeline
-
1991–1997
An electronics degree and Stanford PhD
He earns an honors degree in electronic engineering at Bologna in 1991, then an M.S. in electrical engineering in 1994 and a Ph.D. in 1997 at Stanford.
-
1992–2005
Research at Stanford
At Stanford, he conducts PhD research in its Computer Systems Laboratories from 1992 to 1997, continues as a postdoctoral researcher from 1997 to 1998, and serves as a visiting professor from 1999 to 2005.
-
1994–1996
Industry engineering roles
At Integrated Information Technology, he works as an IC architecture and CAD engineer in 1994. He joins Synopsys as a senior member of technical staff in 1996.
-
Since 2006
Professor at Bologna
He becomes a full professor of electronics at the University of Bologna in 2006.
-
2009–2024
STMicro, ETH and PULP
From 2009 to 2012, he serves as chief architect of STMicroelectronics' Platform 2012 project and begins research at ETH Zurich in 2013. The PULP project releases open-source research IP; in 2024, he coauthors a paper on its heterogeneous AI-acceleration systems-on-chip.
-
2016
PULPino and two honors
In 2016, the PULPino processor is designed for battery-powered devices with extremely low energy consumption. He becomes an ACM Fellow for low-power multiprocessor design and receives IEEE CASS's Mac Van Valkenburg Award for energy-efficient circuit, network, and system design.
-
2024
An open hardware award
He receives the IEEE Computer Society TCMM Open Source Hardware Contribution Award for founding and leading the PULP Platform.
-
As of October 2026
Professorship at ETH and Bologna
He holds the chair of Digital Circuits and Systems at ETH Zurich and is a full professor of electronics in Bologna's Guglielmo Marconi department. He coauthors 2025 research on model parallelism for AI applications on a 64-core RV64 server CPU and 2026 work on ThermADNet, a thermal anomaly-detection system.
