Luca Antiga

Luca Antiga is an AI software builder whose career links medical imaging, PyTorch, and production AI. He earned a Bioengineering PhD at Politecnico di Milano in 2003, worked in research until 2009, developed VMTK, and co-founded Orobix in 2009. He co-authored the 2019 PyTorch paper and the 2020 book Deep Learning with PyTorch, then joined Lightning AI in 2021 and became its CTO in 2022. He became the first chair of the PyTorch Foundation Technical Advisory Council in 2024; the council's work expanded to five groups in 2025. As of October 2026, he is Domyn's CTO, leading global technology strategy and overseeing foundation-model development.

Timeline

  1. 2003–2009

    Medical imaging research

    In 2003, he earns a PhD in Bioengineering at Politecnico di Milano. He works in research until 2009, completes postdoctoral work at Robarts Research Institute under David A. Steinman, then heads Mario Negri Institute’s Medical Imaging Unit. His work spans medical imaging and scientific computing; he develops VMTK for modeling blood vessels from medical images and contributes algorithms to ITK and 3D Slicer.

  2. 2009

    Co-founding Orobix

    With Pietro, he co-founds Orobix in 2009 and helps build a team for deploying AI in demanding, regulated environments.

  3. 2019

    The PyTorch paper

    In 2019, he co-authors the NeurIPS paper “PyTorch: An Imperative Style, High-Performance Deep Learning Library.” It describes an imperative, Pythonic programming style, easier debugging, and support for GPU accelerators.

  4. July 2020

    Deep Learning with PyTorch

    He co-authors Deep Learning with PyTorch with Eli Stevens and Thomas Viehmann; Manning publishes the book in July 2020. It teaches readers to create neural networks and deep-learning systems with PyTorch.

  5. April 2021–2022

    Joining Lightning AI

    In April 2021, he joins Lightning AI when the Tensorwerk team joins Grid AI. He becomes Lightning AI’s CTO in 2022.

  6. October 2024

    First PyTorch TAC chair

    In October 2024, the PyTorch Foundation names him the first Chair of its Technical Advisory Council (TAC).

  7. 2025

    Five TAC working groups

    In 2025, the TAC consolidates its activities into five working groups; two focus on PyTorch’s CI infrastructure. He chairs the council while serving as Lightning AI’s CTO.

  8. As of October 2026

    CTO at Domyn

    In April 2026, Orobix joins Domyn, and he joins its executive team as CTO to lead global technology strategy. As of October 2026, he is Domyn’s CTO, directing the technology roadmap and overseeing foundation-model development.
