Louis Pols
Also known as Louis C.W. Pols
Louis Pols is a phonetician whose research connects speech perception, speech synthesis evaluation and automatic speech recognition. He earned a physics degree in Delft, worked in speech and hearing at TNO, and completed a doctorate on Dutch vowels in 1977. At the University of Amsterdam, he directed the Institute of Phonetic Sciences and served as ESCA president while pursuing work on speech assessment, dynamic vowels and automatic recognition. ISCA awarded him its Medal for Scientific Achievement in 2001 and elected him a Fellow in 2008. He is an emeritus professor of Phonetic Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.
