Louis Martin

Louis Martin is a research scientist at Mistral AI whose work spans text simplification, language models and speech generation. At Inria's ALMAnaCH team, he completed a PhD in automatic sentence simplification in 2021 after publishing a text-simplification evaluation paper in 2018. He coauthored CamemBERT in 2020 and Llama 2 in 2023, a collection of pretrained and fine-tuned models ranging from 7 billion to 70 billion parameters. By 2024, he was listed on the Mistral AI team for Mistral-7B-v0.3, then coauthored Magistral in 2025 and Voxtral TTS in 2026.

    At the 2018 Workshop on Automatic Text Adaptation, he coauthors “Reference-less Quality Estimation of Text Simplification Systems.”

    CamemBERT's French language model

    In 2020, he coauthors CamemBERT, a monolingual Transformer language model for French evaluated on part-of-speech tagging, dependency parsing, named entity recognition and natural language inference.

    In 2023, he coauthors Llama 2, a collection of pretrained and fine-tuned large language models ranging from 7 billion to 70 billion parameters.

    By 2024, he is named among Mistral AI's team for Mistral-7B-v0.3. The model extends v0.2's vocabulary to 32,768 tokens.

    Magistral's reasoning model

    In 2025, he coauthors Magistral, Mistral's first reasoning model. The paper introduces the team's scalable reinforcement-learning pipeline, built on its own models and infrastructure.

    Voxtral TTS

    In 2026, he coauthors Voxtral TTS, an expressive multilingual text-to-speech model that generates natural speech from as little as 3 seconds of reference audio.
