Jesse Heyninck
Jesse Heyninck is a researcher in knowledge representation and reasoning, the branch of AI that lets machines reason logically and transparently, with a focus on formal argumentation, non-monotonic logic and defeasible reasoning. He studied philosophy at Ghent University and earned a PhD summa cum laude at Ruhr University Bochum in January 2019, supervised by Christian Straßer and Ofer Arieli. Research posts in Lisbon, Dortmund, Cape Town and Brussels followed, and in May 2022 he joined the Open Universiteit in the Netherlands. South Africa's National Research Foundation awarded him a P-rating in 2025. He is an assistant professor and the program leader of the Master in Artificial Intelligence at the Open Universiteit, and an honorary research associate at the University of Cape Town.

Timeline
-
2010–2014
Philosophy studies at Ghent
He studies philosophy at Ghent University, spends an Erasmus exchange at the University of Bologna in 2012–2013, and finishes an MA summa cum laude in 2014. His thesis, A Logical and Epistemological Study of the Early Calculus, is supervised by Albrecht Heeffer and Peter Verdée.
-
2015–2019
A Bochum doctorate on defeasible reasoning
From 2015, he is a doctoral researcher at Ruhr University Bochum in the project An Argumentative Approach to Defeasible Reasoning: Towards a Unifying Base Theory, funded by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the context of the Sofja Kovalevskaja award, with Christian Straßer as principal investigator. He completes his PhD in Philosophy summa cum laude in January 2019, with the thesis Investigations into the logical foundations of defeasible reasoning: an Argumentative Perspective, supervised by Straßer and Ofer Arieli. From 2017 to 2021, he also works as a research assistant to Arieli, funded by the Israel Science Foundation.
-
2019–2021
Postdoc in Lisbon, then Dortmund
In 2019, he is a postdoctoral researcher on the project RIVER: Reasoning with Knowledge and Streams at the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa. From 2019 to 2021, he is a researcher at the Technical University Dortmund on the project Conditional Argumentative Reasoning, led by Matthias Thimm and Gabriele Kern-Isberner. In 2021, he coauthors "Arguing about Complex Formulas: Generalizing Abstract Dialectical Frameworks" and "Possibilistic logic underlies abstract dialectical frameworks", both accepted for the 19th International Workshop on Nonmonotonic Reasoning.
-
2021–2022
Postdoc at CAIR in Cape Town
From 2021, he is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research at the University of Cape Town, supervised by Tommie Meyer and Deshen Moodley. His research interests lie in knowledge representation and reasoning, especially formal argumentation, non-monotonic logics and defeasible reasoning. In 2022, he also holds a postdoctoral fellowship at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium.
-
May 2022
Assistant professor at Open Universiteit
In May 2022, he becomes an assistant professor in computer science at the Open Universiteit in the Netherlands.
-
2024
Co-chairing the NMR 2024 workshop
In 2024, he co-chairs the Workshop on Non-Monotonic Reasoning (NMR 2024), the venue of his first publication. He also gives a tutorial on Approximation Fixpoint Theory at KR 2024 with Hannes Straß.

2025
An NRF P-rating
In 2025, South Africa's National Research Foundation awards him a P-rating, a recognition for promising young researchers who have held a doctorate for less than five years. The University of Cape Town's Department of Computer Science, where he is an honorary research associate, notes his contributions to formal argumentation, non-monotonic reasoning, logic programming and approximation fixpoint theory. His work on knowledge representation and reasoning, the branch of AI that lets machines reason logically and transparently, aims at a hybrid framework that joins symbolic and sub-symbolic AI to improve trust in AI systems.

As of October 2026
Program leader of the AI Master
He is an assistant professor in computer science at the Open Universiteit and the program leader of its Master in Artificial Intelligence. He is also an honorary research associate in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town.
