José Júlio Alferes

Also known as José Alferes, José Júlio Alves Alferes

José Júlio Alferes is an AI researcher whose work spans logic programming, nonmonotonic reasoning and knowledge representation. He completed a PhD at NOVA in 1993, led academic units at Évora and FCT NOVA, and coauthored a 2010 paper on CDF-Rules for hybrid knowledge bases. He became a EurAI Fellow in 2012 and is a researcher at NOVA LINCS, where he has worked since 2015. He is Dean of NOVA FCT for the 2026–2030 term.

Timeline

  1. 1993

    A PhD on explicit negation

At Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, he completes a PhD in Computer Science in October 1993, with a thesis on the semantics of logic programs with explicit negation. His AI research includes logic programming, nonmonotonic reasoning and knowledge representation.

  2. 1993–2000

    Academic posts at Évora

From October 1993 until he becomes an Associate Professor at NOVA in 2000, he serves as an Assistant Professor in Évora's Department of Mathematics. From 1995 to 1997, he directs the Departmental Area of Exact Sciences. He also heads the Mathematics Department and is responsible in Évora for a joint M.Sc. in Applied Artificial Intelligence with NOVA.

  3. September 2009–September 2011

    Head of Computer Science

From September 2009 to September 2011, he leads the Computer Science Department at FCT NOVA.

  4. 2010

    CDF-Rules for hybrid knowledge bases

In 2010, he coauthors “Implementing Query Answering for Hybrid MKNF Knowledge Bases” with Ana Sofia Gomes and Terrance Swift. The paper describes CDF-Rules, a query-driven system for hybrid knowledge bases that combines nonmonotonic rules under well-founded semantics with an ontology.

  5. September 2011–June 2018

    Vice-Dean at FCT NOVA

From September 2011 to June 2018, he serves as FCT NOVA's Vice-Dean.

  6. 2012

    A EurAI fellowship

In 2012, he becomes a Fellow of the European Society for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI). APPIA lists him among six Portuguese AI community members recognized as fellows.

  7. Since 2015

    Research at NOVA LINCS

Since 2015, he is a researcher at NOVA LINCS, where he coordinates the Knowledge-Based Systems group.

  8. Since July 2026

    Dean of NOVA FCT

In July 2026, he takes office for a second term as Dean of NOVA FCT, covering 2026–2030.
