Researcher

Deshen Moodley

Also known as Deshendran Moodley

Deshen Moodley is a computer scientist whose AI work spans autonomous agents, human decision-making, and explainable prediction. After five years in software work across South Africa, the UK, and the US, he returned to academia in 2001 for an AI PhD at UKZN and taught computer science there. He helped launch CAIR as its deputy director and a senior lecturer at UKZN in 2011, coauthored a hybrid POMDP-BDI architecture in 2017, and joined the Intercontinental Academia’s intelligence and AI cohort in 2021. UCT awarded him its AI Systems SARChI Chair in 2023; his Paris IAS residency from September 2023 through June 2024 focused on augmented agents for human decisions and scientific discovery. He coauthored a Bayesian-network approach to explainable disease-risk prediction in 2025; as of October 2026, he holds UCT's DSTI/NRF-UCT co-funded Chair in Artificial Intelligence Systems and contributes research guidance to ChaosNetBench.

Timeline

  1. 2001

    An AI doctorate at UKZN

He studies computer science at the University of Durban-Westville and earns honours and master's degrees at the University of Natal. After five years in software work across South Africa, the UK, and the US, he returns to academia in 2001 for an AI PhD at UKZN and teaches computer science there.

  2. 2011

    A deputy director at CAIR

In 2011, he helps launch the UKZN/CSIR-Meraka Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research and serves as its Deputy Director and a Senior Lecturer in UKZN's School of Computer Science.

  3. 2017

    A hybrid POMDP-BDI architecture

In 2017, he coauthors with Gavin Rens a hybrid POMDP-BDI agent architecture for stochastic, noisy environments. It combines POMDP planning with BDI multiple-goal management and a library for storing plans for future reuse.

  4. 2021

    An Intercontinental Academia fellowship

In 2021, the Intercontinental Academia selects him as one of 19 international fellows for its fourth edition on intelligence and artificial intelligence.

  5. 2023

A SARChI chair in AI Systems

In 2023, UCT awards him the DSI/NRF-UCT SARChI Research Chair in AI Systems, based in the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit in the Department of Computer Science.

  6. September 2023–June 2024

    Augmented agents at Paris IAS

From September 2023 through June 2024, he is a resident at the Paris Institute for Advanced Study. His project develops augmented AI agents to support interactive human decision-making and scientific knowledge discovery.

  7. 2025

    Explainable disease-risk prediction

In 2025, he coauthors with Mbithe Nzomo a COMPSAC paper that constructs Bayesian networks from ontology-based knowledge graphs and electronic health records for explainable disease-risk prediction. The paper applies the approach to atrial-fibrillation risk prediction using real-world records.

  8. As of October 2026

    ChaosNetBench and the UCT chair

In September 2026, he contributes research supervision and guidance to the conceptualisation of ChaosNetBench, an open-source framework for evaluating spatio-temporal graph neural networks. As of October 2026, he holds UCT's DSTI/NRF-UCT co-funded Chair in Artificial Intelligence Systems in the Department of Computer Science, where he heads the Artificial Intelligence Research Unit.
