Researcher

Christof Paar

Christof Paar is a security researcher whose work brings machine learning into hardware security. He earned an engineering Ph.D. at Essen in 1994, taught WPI's first experimental introductory cryptography and data-security course in 1995, and worked at Ruhr University Bochum from 2001 to 2019. His coauthored research demonstrates a machine-learning hardware backdoor and applies unsupervised deep learning to SEM images. In 2004, he helped spin off ESCRYPT, and in 2019 he became a founding director of the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy. UNIPRENEURS honored him in 2026 for supporting university spin-offs; as of October 2026, he is a founding director at MPI-SP and an affiliated professor at UMass Amherst.

Timeline

  1. 1994

    An engineering doctorate

He earns a Ph.D. in engineering from the Institute for Experimental Mathematics at the University of Essen in 1994.

  2. 1995–2001

    Cryptography at WPI

At WPI, he offers the first experimental introductory course in cryptography and data security in fall 1995. He works there from 1995 to 2001.

  3. 2001–2019

    Embedded security in Bochum

At Ruhr University Bochum, he works from 2001 to 2019 while the Embedded Security group (EMSEC) serves as a core chair at the Horst-Görtz Institute. He serves as a research professor at UMass Amherst during the 2008–2009 academic year and from 2014 to 2016.

  4. 2004–2012

    Spinning off ESCRYPT

In 2004, he and Willi Mannheims spin off ESCRYPT from the EMSEC chair; Bosch acquires the company in 2012.

  5. 2019

    Founding director at MPI-SP

In 2019, the Max Planck Society names him a founding director of its new Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy.

  6. 2023

    Hardware Trojans and SEM images

In 2023, he coauthors Evil from Within: Machine Learning Backdoors through Hardware Trojans, which demonstrates a hardware Trojan in the Xilinx Vitis AI DPU, a commercial machine-learning accelerator. In 2023, he also coauthors a study that uses unsupervised deep learning to segment SEM images without manual labels.

  7. 2026

    A UNIPRENEURS honor

In 2026, UNIPRENEURS honors him as one of twenty professors recognized for supporting spin-offs and entrepreneurship at universities.

  8. As of October 2026

    Director at MPI-SP and UMass

As of October 2026, he is a founding director of MPI-SP in Bochum and an affiliated professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
