Researcher

Igor Gilitschenski

Igor Gilitschenski is a robotics and machine-learning researcher who builds perception and decision-making methods for robots and autonomous vehicles. He completed a doctorate at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2015, worked on visual navigation at ETH Zurich's Autonomous Systems Lab, and then led the autonomous driving research team of MIT's Distributed Robotics Lab. After joining the University of Toronto Mississauga in 2021, he shared a 2022 Sony Focused Research Award on neural radiance fields and helped develop the REPPO reinforcement-learning algorithm. He is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto, where he leads the Toronto Intelligent Systems Lab, and a faculty member at the Vector Institute.

Timeline

  1. 2015

    A doctorate at KIT

He defends his dissertation, Deterministic Sampling for Nonlinear Dynamic State Estimation, in April 2015 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology's Intelligent Sensor-Actuator-Systems lab, with University College London's Simon J. Julier as second advisor. Earlier, he earns a Diploma in Mathematics from the University of Stuttgart.

  2. 2020

    Best paper award at RA-L

He receives a Best Paper Award at RA-L in 2020. His earlier Best Paper Awards come at Fusion in 2014 and at ACC in 2017.

  3. By 2021

    Autonomous driving at MIT

He works on visual navigation at the Autonomous Systems Lab of ETH Zurich, then joins MIT as a research scientist in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab and its Distributed Robotics Lab. By 2021, he is technical lead of the Distributed Robotics Lab's autonomous driving research team, works within the Toyota-CSAIL Joint Research Center, and advises MIT's driverless racing team.

  4. 2021

    Joining Toronto and Toyota Research

In 2021, he joins the University of Toronto Mississauga as an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, in its Robotics Research Group. He also becomes a Research Scientist on the Toyota Research Institute's Risk Aware Driving Team as a contractor, building tools to predict the future behaviour of other vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians around an autonomous car.

  5. 2022

    A Sony Focused Research Award

He and Nandita Vijaykumar jointly receive a 2022 Sony Focused Research Award to explore neural radiance fields, a deep learning technique for representing and rendering 3D scenes. Their project, Fast and Efficient Online 3D Reconstruction on Resource-Constrained Devices using Implicit Neural Representations, aims to bring efficient 3D reconstruction to low-power mobile devices.

  6. 2024

    A project with Toyota Research

In 2024, he and Florian Shkurti start a two-year project with the Toyota Research Institute on the sources of uncertainty, such as the movement of people and objects, that affect a robot's performance and reliability. It is the first time TRI collaborates with a Canadian university through its University Research Program.

  7. 2025

    The REPPO training algorithm

With Claas Völcker and a nine-person team, he helps develop Relative Entropy Pathwise Policy Optimization (REPPO), a reinforcement-learning algorithm described in a 2025 paper and presented at the International Conference on Learning Representations. In testing, roughly 80 per cent of REPPO training runs reach and maintain high performance, compared with about 40 per cent for Proximal Policy Optimization.

  8. As of October 2026

Leading the Toronto Intelligent Systems Lab

He is an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga and a Vector Institute faculty member. He leads the Toronto Intelligent Systems Lab, which works on embodied AI and robot learning. With Nick Rhinehart, he receives 2026–2028 Joint Seed funding for a project on learning world models as data-driven simulators for robot manipulation of rigid and deformable objects.
