Igor Babuschkin

Igor Babuschkin is an AI engineer who helped build AlphaStar at Google DeepMind and then helped found Elon Musk's xAI. Before that, he moved from particle physics at CERN into AI research. He worked at OpenAI and co-authored the Codex paper, which was submitted in July 2021. In July 2023 Musk unveiled xAI with Babuschkin among its twelve founding members, and in August 2025 he left xAI to start Babuschkin Ventures. As of October 2026, he is co-founder and chief executive of River AI, which came out of stealth in June 2026.

  1. By 2019

    From particle physics to AlphaStar

    Moving from particle physics at CERN into AI research at Google DeepMind, he helps build AlphaStar, which defeats top-ranked human StarCraft players in 2019.

  2. 2021

    The Codex paper

    The Codex paper, Evaluating Large Language Models Trained on Code, is submitted in July 2021 with him as a co-author. Before xAI, he holds roles at DeepMind and OpenAI.

  3. July 2023

    A founding member of xAI

    Elon Musk unveils xAI in July 2023, and Babuschkin is one of its 12 founding members.

  4. August 2025

    Leaving xAI for Babuschkin Ventures

    In August 2025 he leaves xAI to launch Babuschkin Ventures, an investment fund for safe and trustworthy AI projects.

  5. June–August 2026

    River AI out of stealth

    He founds River AI, a Palo Alto company that comes out of stealth in June 2026. The company announces $1.1 billion across its Series Seed and Series A rounds in August 2026.
