Florian Shkurti
Florian Shkurti is a roboticist whose AI research spans safe robot learning, autonomous driving and laboratory automation. After undergraduate study at the University of Toronto and a computer science PhD at McGill, he joined U of T in 2018. In 2020, he coauthored safe-exploration research and received an Amazon Research Award for work on adversarial driving simulation; in 2021, he received U of T’s Connaught New Researcher Award for environmental monitoring. His 2024 work includes ORGANA for chemistry experiments and an AI2050 Early Career Fellowship for self-driving lab research; in 2025, he coauthored RoboCulture for biological experiments. As of October 2026, he is an associate professor at U of T, directs its Robot Vision and Learning lab and works part-time as a visiting research scientist at Ai2.
Timeline
-
2018
Joining U of T Mississauga
He completes undergraduate studies at U of T and earns a PhD in computer science at McGill before U of T hires him in 2018.
-
2020
Conservative Safety Critics for Exploration
In 2020, he coauthors Conservative Safety Critics for Exploration, which learns a conservative safety estimate of environment states to bound catastrophic failures during reinforcement-learning exploration.
-
2020
An Amazon Research Award
In 2020, he receives an Amazon Research Award for a project on physically realizable adversarial driving scenarios using differentiable physics and rendering simulators.
-
2021
The Connaught New Researcher Award
In 2021, he receives the Connaught New Researcher Award for a project on robotics and machine learning in automated environmental monitoring.
-
January 2024
ORGANA for chemistry labs
In January 2024, he coauthors ORGANA, an assistive robotic system that automates chemistry experiments with decision-making and perception tools; the system makes decisions with chemists in the loop to control robots and lab devices.
-
December 2024
An AI2050 Early Career Fellowship
In December 2024, he becomes an AI2050 Early Career Fellow for a project to develop self-driving labs that combine AI and robotics for materials discovery.
-
May 2025
RoboCulture for biology labs
In May 2025, he coauthors RoboCulture, a platform that automates biological tasks with a general-purpose robotic manipulator and computer vision for real-time decisions and optical-density growth monitoring.
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor and lab director
As of October 2026, he is an associate professor in U of T’s Department of Computer Science at UTM and directs the Robot Vision and Learning lab. He works part-time as a visiting research scientist at Ai2 in Seattle and is a faculty member of the Vector Institute and Acceleration Consortium. His research spans machine learning, perception, planning and control.
