Nandita Vijaykumar
Nandita Vijaykumar is a computer-systems researcher who designs the hardware, compilers and runtimes that let machines run computer vision, robotics and deep-learning workloads efficiently. Her papers with Onur Mutlu and Phil Gibbons include Zorua, a GPU resource-virtualization framework from 2016, and the Expressive Memory interface from 2018, and she received her Carnegie Mellon PhD in 2020. By 2021, she was an assistant professor at the University of Toronto and was inducted into the ISCA Hall of Fame for publishing at least eight papers at the conference. In 2022, she and Igor Gilitschenski received a Sony Focused Research Award for work on running neural radiance fields for 3D reconstruction on low-power mobile devices. She is an assistant professor of computer science at Toronto, where she leads the embARC research group, and she is also a faculty member at the Vector Institute and a Research Scholar at Amazon.

October 2016
GPU virtualization with Zorua
In October 2016, she and coauthors including Phillip B. Gibbons and Onur Mutlu publish Zorua at the International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO). The framework decouples the resource usage a programmer specifies for a GPU application from the allocation in on-chip hardware.
-
June 2018
Expressive Memory at ISCA
In June 2018, she and coauthors including Gennady Pekhimenko, Phillip B. Gibbons and Onur Mutlu publish “A Case for Richer Cross-layer Abstractions: Bridging the Semantic Gap with Expressive Memory” at ISCA. The paper proposes Expressive Memory (XMem), a cross-layer interface built on an abstraction called an Atom, which passes program semantics from the application to the system software and hardware.
-
2020
PhD at Carnegie Mellon
She receives her PhD and MS from Carnegie Mellon University in 2020, advised by Onur Mutlu and Phil Gibbons. She also works with the Systems Group at ETH Zurich as a visiting student, and has worked at AMD, Intel, Microsoft and Nvidia.
-
By 2021
Assistant professor at Toronto
She works as a research scientist in the Memory Architecture and Accelerator Lab at Intel Labs before joining the University of Toronto. By 2021, she is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at U of T Scarborough and in the tri-campus graduate Department of Computer Science.
-
2021
ISCA Hall of Fame induction
In 2021, she and Gennady Pekhimenko are inducted into the International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA) Hall of Fame for publishing at least eight papers in the conference. Her interests include the system-level and programming challenges of accelerators, memory systems and, more recently, robotics and large-scale machine learning.

2022
A Sony Focused Research Award
She and Igor Gilitschenski jointly receive a 2022 Sony Focused Research Award for a project on efficient online 3D reconstruction on resource-constrained devices using implicit neural representations. The project applies hardware and software co-design to neural radiance fields, a deep learning technique for representing and rendering 3D scenes, to bring them to low-power mobile devices.

As of October 2026
Leading embARC at Toronto
She is an assistant professor of computer science at the University of Toronto, where she leads the embARC research group, a faculty member at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, and a Research Scholar at Amazon. The group's cross-stack co-design work spans algorithms, compilers, runtimes and hardware for 3D reconstruction, differentiable rendering, perception and multi-modal generative models, and she presents it in the talk “From Pixels to Kernels” at Waterloo in October 2025.
