Fei Wu

Also known as Fei Qing Wu, Wu Fei, 吴飞

Fei Wu is a Zhejiang University computer scientist who works on artificial intelligence, multimedia analysis and the teaching of AI to university students. He earned a Ph.D. at Zhejiang University in 2002, spent October 2009 to August 2010 as a visiting scholar in Bin Yu's group at the University of California, Berkeley, and received the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China award in 2016. In 2020, he was the first-listed author of a Nature Machine Intelligence Perspective on China's New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan, and in 2021 he helped launch the "AI + X" program with Huawei, Baidu and SenseTime. Zhejiang University gave him its Distinguished Teaching Award in 2022, when he directed its Institute of Artificial Intelligence. As of October 2026, he is dean of Zhejiang University's Undergraduate School.

    Degrees from Lanzhou to Zhejiang

    He earns a B.Sc. in computer science from Lanzhou University in 1996, an M.Sc. from the University of Macau in 1999 and a Ph.D. from Zhejiang University in 2002.

  2. October 2009–August 2010

    Visiting scholar at Berkeley

    From October 2009 to August 2010, he is a visiting scholar in Bin Yu's group at the University of California, Berkeley.

  3. 2016

    Distinguished Young Scholars award

    He receives the Award of National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of China in 2016. His research covers artificial intelligence, multimedia analysis and retrieval, and machine learning.

  4. 2019

    An introductory AI textbook

    In autumn 2019, he publishes the textbook Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: Models and Algorithms, which reaches a third edition within three years. In 2019, he also completes an information technology textbook for high school students.

  5. 2020

    A Nature Machine Intelligence Perspective

    In June 2020, he is the first-listed author of a Nature Machine Intelligence Perspective that introduces China's New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan (2015–2030) from the view of AI experts from academia and industry who took part in stages of the plan.

  6. 2021

    The AI + X program

    In April 2021, he and computer science teachers from six universities launch the "AI + X" program with Huawei, Baidu and SenseTime. The program teaches the basics of AI to students outside computer science.

  7. 2022

    Yongping Distinguished Teaching Award

    In 2022, he is one of two recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Award of Zhejiang University's Yongping Teaching Award, which carries a cash prize of 1 million yuan. He directs the university's Institute of Artificial Intelligence, has set up the Zhihai AI teaching and research platform, and is deputy dean of its Shanghai Institute for Advanced Study.

    Dean of the Undergraduate School

    He is dean of Zhejiang University's Undergraduate School. In September 2025, as Zhejiang rolls out tiered AI general-education courses for all freshmen, he calls for a demand-driven education system that covers all students through tiered and diversified instruction. In May 2026, he describes the university's Future Learning Center as a progressive training model that moves from interest discovery to project incubation.
