Ian D. Reid
Also known as Ian Reid
Ian D. Reid is a computer vision researcher whose work spans machine learning, visual SLAM, and robotics. At Oxford, he ran the Active Vision Group with David Murray and co-authored the 2007 MonoSLAM paper. At Adelaide, he held an ARC Laureate Fellowship, served as Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision, and became a Fellow of two Australian academies. As of October 2026, he is Acting Vice Provost of Research, Senior Director of Research Administration, and Professor of Computer Vision at MBZUAI.

1987–1992
A science degree and doctorate
He earned a BSc in Computer Science and Mathematics with first class honours at the University of Western Australia in 1987. At Oxford, he completed a D.Phil. in 1992.

1992–2012
An active vision group
At Oxford, he served as a Research Fellow (1992–2000), then became Professor of Engineering Science and ran the Active Vision Group with David Murray (2000–2012). In 2007, he co-authored MonoSLAM: Real-Time Single Camera SLAM.

A professorship in Adelaide
In 2012, he became Professor of Computer Science at the University of Adelaide.

2013–2018
A Laureate research fellowship
He led the Life-long Computer Vision Systems project as an ARC Australian Laureate Fellow.

Election to ATSE
In 2016, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering elected him a Fellow.

2021
Fellow and deputy director
In 2021, the Australian Academy of Science elected him a Fellow. He was Deputy Director of the Australian Centre for Robotic Vision in 2021 and led its Semantic Representations research program. His work spans visual geometry, tracking, novel-view synthesis, visual surveillance, and SLAM across computer vision, machine learning, AI, and robotics.

In November 2025, he chaired MBZUAI's Symposium on Embodied AI.
