Researcher

Stephen Roberts

Stephen Roberts works on the theory and application of machine learning, especially sequential data and dynamical systems. He earned a first degree in physics and a DPhil in machine learning, and held an Imperial faculty position before joining Oxford in 1999. He leads Oxford’s machine-learning group and directed the Oxford-Man Institute from 2015 to 2021. Roberts is also a co-founder of Mind Foundry. His research emphasizes robust, reliable methods that represent uncertainty, with applications in astrophysics, ecology, finance and engineering. His work connects foundational research with scientific and practical data-analysis problems.

Timeline

  1. Before 1999

    Physics and machine learning

Roberts earned a first degree in physics and a DPhil in machine learning. He served on Imperial’s faculty before his Oxford appointment.

  2. 1999

    Oxford appointment

He joined Oxford in 1999. As of October 2026, he was professor of machine learning and led the machine-learning research group.

  3. 2015–2021

    Research institution leadership

He directed the Oxford-Man Institute from 2015 to 2021. He helped found the doctoral-training centre for autonomous, intelligent machines and systems and co-founded Mind Foundry.

  4. As of October 2026

    Learning with uncertainty

His research concerns sequential data and dynamical systems, with methods designed for robust and uncertainty-aware analysis. His application areas include astrophysics, ecology, finance and data-centric engineering.
