Brian Avants

Also known as Brian B. Avants

Brian Avants is a biomedical imaging researcher whose work connects machine learning with medical-image analysis. In 1999, he quantified CT and MRI vasculature at Siemens, and he received the 2007 MICCAI Best Paper Award for multivariate normalization. He earned degrees in physics, computer science and bioengineering, joined Penn Radiology, and created ANTs while advancing ITK registration. ANTsR contributed to a BRATS segmentation win in 2013, and he later coauthored Invicro's CNN-based image-quality work. As of October 2026, he is affiliated with UVA's Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging and coauthors research on latent-aligned normalizing flows for multimodal data.

Timeline

  1. 1999

    A developer at Siemens

In 1999, he works as a developer at Siemens Corporate Research in Princeton, quantifies and visualizes 3D vasculature from CT and MRI, and develops a proof-of-concept graphical interface. His software leads to a clinical application.

  2. 2007

    A MICCAI Best Paper Award

He receives MICCAI's Best Paper Award in 2007 for ‘Multivariate Normalization with Symmetric Diffeomorphisms for Multivariate Studies.’

  3. By 2012

Degrees from New College and Penn

By 2012, he holds a BA in physics from New College of Florida, an MS in computer science and a PhD in bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania.

  4. 2012

    Assistant professor and ANTs author

In 2012, he joins Penn Radiology as an assistant professor and is the original author of Advanced Normalization Tools (ANTs), an image-registration toolkit.

  5. 2013

    ANTsR and a BRATS win

In 2013, he develops ANTsR for standardized multimodal image analysis; it contributes to a win in the BRATS brain-tumor segmentation challenge.

  6. 2014

    An interface for ITK registration

In 2014, he coauthors a software-framework paper that describes an interface for high-level access to ITK registration tools through ANTs.

  7. 2022

    CNNs for image-quality prediction

In 2022, he coauthors an AWS article on Invicro's image-quality models, which use convolutional neural networks trained on the Koniq10K natural-image dataset.

  8. As of October 2026

    Latent-aligned normalizing flows

As of October 2026, he is affiliated with UVA's Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging and coauthors research on latent-aligned multiview normalizing flows for multimodal datasets.
