Bhiksha Raj
Bhiksha Raj is a professor at Carnegie Mellon whose AI research spans speech recognition, machine learning, and privacy-preserving speech processing. As a CMU doctoral student in 1996, he worked on noise-robust recognition and earned his PhD in electrical and computer engineering in 2000, after earlier study at Osmania University and the Indian Institute of Technology. He joined the university's faculty in 2009, became chief architect of Sphinx-4, and was named an IEEE Fellow in 2017 and an ISCA Fellow in 2024. In July 2025, he coauthored a label-free method for estimating speech recognition error rates; as of October 2026, he is a professor in the Language Technologies Institute.
