Researcher

Hanspeter Pfister

Hanspeter Pfister is a Harvard researcher whose work applies machine learning to image analysis and visualization. He trained in electrical engineering at ETH Zurich and computer science at Stony Brook, then led the design of VolumePro, Mitsubishi Electric’s real-time rendering hardware. At Harvard, his group used machine learning to map neural connections, and he later coauthored an augmented-reality basketball coach powered by a large language model. He directed Harvard’s Institute for Applied Computational Science and was elected an ACM Fellow in 2019. As of October 2026, he is the An Wang Professor of Computer Science and Academic Dean of Computational Sciences and Engineering.

Timeline

  1. 1991–1996

    Studying engineering and computing

He earned an M.S. in electrical engineering at ETH Zurich in 1991 and a Ph.D. in computer science at Stony Brook in 1996.

  2. 1996–2007

    Building real-time rendering

From 1996 to 2007, he worked at Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories. His roles included Associate Director and Senior Research Scientist, and he was chief architect of VolumePro, the company’s real-time volume-rendering hardware for PCs.

  3. 2007–2011

    Mapping neural connections

In 2007, he began working with Harvard neuroscientist Jeff Lichtman on three-dimensional maps of neural connections. By 2011, his group had built machine-learning algorithms to detect cell boundaries and connect neurons across brain images.

  4. 2007–2012

    A textbook and SIGGRAPH

His visual-computing research spans visualization, computer graphics, and computer vision. He co-edited the first Point-Based Computer Graphics textbook, published in 2007, and served as Technical Papers Chair for SIGGRAPH 2012.

  5. 2013–2017

    Directing computational science

He directed Harvard’s Institute for Applied Computational Science.

  6. 2019

    An ACM fellowship

ACM elected him an ACM Fellow in 2019.

  7. 2026

    Training with a language model

He coauthored ViSTAR, an augmented-reality basketball training system that turns motion data into coaching cues with a large language model. The Harvard team behind BRIDGE, with Pfister as senior author, received the 2026 CHI Best Paper Award for converting standard basketball footage into wheelchair-basketball videos.

  8. As of October 2026

    Leading at Harvard

He is Harvard’s An Wang Professor of Computer Science and Academic Dean of Computational Sciences and Engineering.
